Albany military memorabilia sought

Albany residents and military history enthusiasts are invited to dig out their military heirlooms and share their tales at an event this week.

The WA Museum Albany will hold a military memorabilia day, which aims to show anything from photographs, letters and diaries to uniforms, arms and ration tins.

The day will also serve as inspiration for Illuminart, which is creating the projections and storytelling as part of Anzac centenary commemorations that will feature projections of still images, historical footage and storytelling at different places around Albany over the commemoration period.

Public programs officer Malcolm Traill said Illuminart was looking for stories connected to Albany.

"They're hopeful to gather some stories and even pictures or a chance to film some of the objects for projection," he said.

"It is also for stories that could be written into scripts.

"The idea is to see what people have tucked away in a military sense - the theory is that every household in Australia has a military item.

"It's to give people an idea of what it is, is it significant, are there stories attached to it - just give it some life."

Retired conservator Maggie Myers and WA Museum conservator and scientist Ian MacLeod will be able to provide preservation techniques at the event.

Also attending will be Illuminart representatives, Princess Royal Fortress curator David Theodore, Youngs Siding collector Kathryn Chaplane and ABC Open, to discuss the project.

The military memorabilia day will be held at WA Museum Albany on Wednesday, 10am to 6pm. Call 9841 4844 for more. Dr MacLeod will also make a presentation.
