New landslide at Honduras mine
A new cave-in at the gold mine in southern Honduras where eight men are trapped has complicated rescue efforts.
Three of the 11 miners caught in the original cave-in on July 2 were rescued alive last week.
While the official operation to find the other eight was suspended on Monday, other miners and their families decided to continue the search at their own risk.
The new collapse on Wednesday blocked "once again the entrance to the sector where the eight miners are (trapped)," Ivan Campos, regional deputy director of the Copeco emergency management agency, said in a statement.
The Honduran government on Wednesday announced that it will provide "comprehensive attention," including the delivery of housing, for the area around the mine.
The administration of President Juan Orlando Hernandez said in a communique that it will support efforts directed toward economically rejuvenating the area via agriculture, with support for the cultivation of coffee, beans and other activities so that the public will not have to depend on unregulated mining for their livelihood.
