NPL - Veteran seals Subiaco's success
A goal deep into stoppage time from veteran striker Ian McMurray gave Subiaco a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win against Floreat Athena at the WA Athletics Stadium on Saturday.
Floreat raced to a 2-0 lead in the second half with goals to Aryn Williams and Lewis McMahon but Jordan Rhodes pulled one back for Subiaco two minutes later, before Ger Fitzgerald and McMurray gave the home side a dramatic victory.
At Intiga Stadium, two red cards, an almost comedic goal and a wonder strike made up a frantic second half in the 1-1 draw between Armadale and Inglewood.
Armadale took the lead in comical style as a miscommunication between Inglewood goalkeeper Luke Martino and defender Shane Pickering allowed Armadale’s Faustinho Machochi to walk the ball into an unguarded net.
Inglewood equalised after Andrija Jukic was pulled down on the edge of the box, allowing skipper Sharland to fire home a brilliant free kick and set up a grand stand finish.
Armadale’s Billy Quinncroft and Alex Solomons were both sent off after scuffles with Inglewood players.
Bayswater City held onto top spot with an inspired performance against ECU Joondalup at ECU Football Stadium.
It was a spirited first-half performance from Bayswater but ECU held firm, largely thanks to the stellar performance of keeper Andy Banks.
Despite an onslaught of chances from the visitors, a controversial penalty converted by Bayswater’s Steve Burton was the only goal.
At Dorrien Gardens, Perth SC’s Mark Doninger also scored from the penalty spot as his side secured a 1-0 win in their “Ferrari Cup” match against Balcatta.
While Balcatta showed glimpses of their recent winning form, chances for the visitors were few and far between as Perth maintained a defensive stranglehold.
Perth scored the sole goal for the match in the 22nd minute after being gifted a penalty for a trip in the box. Doninger made it look easy as he sent keeper Clint Davies the wrong way.
Sorrento’s slim league title hopes were kept alive as Sean Canham's 83rd minute equaliser secured a point from their 1-1 draw with Stirling Lions at Macedonia Park.
Sorrento's defence was impenetrable in the first half but slipped up when they brought down Jack Salter in the box and Stirling’s David Micevski smashed in the resulting penalty.
Sorrento came out fighting in the second half and their pressure paid off when stand-in captain Daryl Platten headed a corner towards goal for Canham to finish.
Cockburn City held onto their chances of a top-four finish as they condemned the young Perth Glory side to their ninth successive defeat.
Matt Barlow gave the Cockerels a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute as the home side finished the opening half the stronger. But Glory bounced back onto level terms just three minutes after the interval through Jacob Collard's second effort after his initial shot had struck the woodwork.
Devon Gibson scored Cockburn's winner in the 60th minute with a 30m strike.
