Jimmy Choo coming to Perth

When it comes to shoes there are few names as synonymous as Jimmy Choo.

And in his first visit to Australia, the world-renowned bespoke designer, who co-founded the luxury brand, is coming to Perth.

The West Australian's Fashion Agenda and Hawaiian are bringing Choo to Australia for The Business Behind the Glamour lunch at Crown Perth's grand ballroom on August 7.

Choo, 52, will be on stage where he will discuss his incredible life and career in a conversation moderated by The Morning Show's co-host Kylie Gillies.

Choo will bring some of his favourite shoe creations from his three-decade career that will be displayed at Claremont Quarter from August 7 to 23. He will open the display at 6pm on August 7.

Born in Malaysia in 1961, Choo became immersed in the world of shoemaking from an early age and made his first pair of shoes at just 11. His father was a cobbler.

Choo moved to Britain in the 1980s to study at Cordwainers Technical College, where he graduated with honours in 1983.

After opening his first shop in Hackney in 1986, Choo quickly became the darling of London's fashion and celebrity scene.

The ready-to-wear line, which bears his name, was founded in 1996 with former British Vogue accessories editor Tamara Mellon. It shot to worldwide fame when Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw "lost her Choo", a pair of extravagantly feathered Jimmy Choo heels, on an episode of Sex and the City in 1998.

Choo sold his share of the business for a reported £10 million in 2001, but still designs luxury shoes with his by-appointment-only Jimmy Choo Couture line.

He has designed for many of the world's highest profile women, but there is one who will always hold a special place in his heart, Princess Diana. "One day a close friend of mine asked me if I would like to design a shoe for Princess Diana," Choo told West Weekend in an exclusive interview to be published next Saturday.

"I was amazed to learn that she was aware of my designs. I couldn't believe it; I was delighted of course."

Choo still owns the pair of her shoes (gold pumps) he was working on at the time of her death in 1997. When asked about what he knows about Australia, he said, "Kylie Minogue."

"She came to my East End workshop many years ago. My son was so excited," he said.

"I also love Natalie Imbruglia, and Nicole Kidman, of course.

"I have designed shoes for both of them.

"I know many, many talented Australians, so I am looking forward to visiting the country."
