Police target outlaw biker gangs over flow of illicit drugs to Territory

Police say they are cracking down on organised crime gangs supplying drugs in the Northern Territory.

They are working with a national anti-gang drug task force to address the flow of drugs coming into the Territory from interstate.

Outlaw motorcycle gangs are key players in the local and national illegal drug industry, police say.

Earlier this month, three outlaw motorcycle gang members were charged with drug possession, robbery and firearm offences in the Territory.

Assistant Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw says drugs in the Territory are being sold at double the price of those in southern states.

He says motorcycle gangs pose a threat in the Territory because they see it as such a lucrative market.

"They have a significant share [of drug dealing] across Australia," he said.

"Approximately 63 per cent of amphetamines seized [in the NT] this year were sourced from interstate."

He says a number of strategies and new initiatives have been developed to combat criminal groups.

Two clandestine drug laboratories were uncovered by police in Darwin on Friday.
