Giant mural unveiled in Melbourne

Melbourne's street art reputation has reached new heights with the unveiling of what is believed to be Australia's biggest mural.

The large-scale portrait, measuring 35-metres in height, is being painted by world renowned artist Rone.

Rone has spent almost ten hours a day for the past four days, perched on a cherry picker transforming the outside wall of the Collins Street building.

The artist, who has works featured in cities across the globe, claims it is one of his biggest street art projects yet.

Months in planning, Rone said the opportunity to create a Melbourne landmark is an incredibly rewarding experience for an artist.

"Melbourne's street art is up there with some of the best in the world," he said.

"We are just starting to embrace these colossal size works that exist in many European cities, and in the next few years works this size e mat become a common sight."

His muse is 20-year-old Byron Bay model Teresa Omen and the work is titled L'innconnue de la Rue, which translates as 'Unknown Girl in the Street'.

In the last 12 months, Rone has been invited to paint sites in Hong Kong, Berlin, London, Miami, Mexico, Portland, Hawaii, New Zealand, and closer to home in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and now Melbourne.

The mammoth mural will take Rone until Sunday to complete.
