Playing the field. How I win on the Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup. The hardest race to pick a winner. But I’ve walked away with cash in my pocket every year for the past five. Want to know how? Read on. And why not share your system?

Betting today? Best of luck. You’ll need it.

‘They’ reckon the Melbourne Cup is the toughest race of the year to pick a winner. Something to do with the weights. And the foreign horses. Or something.

So, naturally, it’s the one race this year, thousands of Australians figure they’ll give it a shot.

They use science to part with their cash in the pursuit of backing a Cup winner.

The science of lucky numbers or colours. Or ‘I like that name’.

Well let me tell you, I’ve struck upon a formula that’s seen me collect every year for the past five.

That’s right, I haven’t tasted defeat in half a decade.

How many of you can say that?

Here’s one more safe bet: I bet you want to know how I do it.

It’s simple, really.

I use Miss Five.

She doesn’t know it. But she chooses every horse for me.

There’s the day of her birth. The month. The year. And her age.

Sure, it’s not a perfect system. One year, one of the horses was scratched. I had to substitute.

It won.

I just load up those numbers on a betting pack. I get a win and a place and a trifecta and some other things I know nothing about.

And somehow, I manage to finish ahead. By a nose.

Sometimes, it’s the office sweep that gets me over the line.

I usually win just enough to place the same bet the next year.

And that’ll do me.

It gives me a horse (or 4) to cheer home. If I can see their numbers. Because I sure don’t know their names. Or the colours of the jockeys’ silks.

I’m not sure what I’d do if three of the horses came home. A trifecta. A miracle.

Perhaps I’d put it on a trip to the Melbourne Cup.

Miss Five asked me yesterday if we could go to the race. Maybe if her numbers come in.

I’d feel a bit guilty leaving her at home with Grandma.

My 2nd safe bet today: I won’t be confronted with that dilemma this afternoon.

This morning my good luck charm picked her winner. A first for her.

She doesn’t know I put a couple of dollars on it.

I had to. It wasn’t one of her numbers.

Imagine if it wins and I hadn’t backed it?

Her technique was different to mine. But as old as the Melbourne Cup itself.

Miss Five backed number 13. She liked the name. Super Cool.
