Plea to find truckie who filmed firebug

Sydney police are urging a tow-truck driver to come forward after he allegedly caught a young man deliberately lighting a fire.

Officers say the driver approached firefighters at Winston Hills in Sydney’s west yesterday, after a blaze broke out around 4pm.

The driver said he had captured footage on his smartphone of the youth sparking the fire on the corner of Old Windsor Road and Caroline Chisholm Drive.

The witness told emergency workers he would report the incident to police and left the scene.

But police want to view the alleged vision, and they're appealing for the driver to contact them via Crimestoppers on 1800333000.

Meanwhile an elderly man will face court after sparks from an angle grinder caused a fire which continues to burn in central-west New South Wales.

Police say the 76-year-old man was using the grinder on his verandah at Hargraves, south of Mugee yesterday morning, when sparks from the tool caused nearby grass to ignite.

The fire quickly spread out-of-control, and despite the man’s attempts to put out the flames, the fire jumped to neighbouring properties.

Firefighters used several fire engines and waterbombing jets to battle the blaze well into the night.

About 140 hectares of farmland has been affected to date.

A total fire ban remains in place in New South Wales.
