Popular Australian author Bryce Courtenay has died after a battle with stomach cancer, aged 79. His family confirmed the news this morning, saying the South African born writer died at his home in Canberra last night.

Traumatised school leavers are being offered counselling after witnessing a 17-year-old girl fall to her death from a Gold Coast high rise. The Brisbane girl fell from a balcony of the Chevron Renaissance Hotel on one of the final nights of Schoolies celebrations.

Two men arrested in connection with the death of Victorian woman Sarah Cafferkey have been released from police custody without charge. Residents in Melbourne have held a vigil to remember the 22-year-old.

And fresh questions have been raised about the Prime Minister's connection with a property purchased with union money, allegedly stolen by her ex-boyfriend. A former partner in the Slater and Gordon law firm claims Julia Gillard organised insurance for the property back in 1993.
