Man charged over stolen, damaged police van

A 19-year-old man who stole a police van before crashing it into Brisbane's Botanical Gardens gate, has been granted bail at Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Police were responding to an altercation outside a popular Brisbane city nightspot, when their unlocked and unoccupied vehicle was taken by the young reveller.

The man drove approximately 300 metres before ploughing the vehicle into the garden's gates.

After crashing the vehicle, the suspect fleed the scene before a dog squad unit was deployed, which found the man a short time later.

He has been charged with a range of offences including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle, adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, drink-driving, driving without a licence and possession of dangerous drugs.
