Morcombes' plea for son's remains
Bruce and Denise Morcombe have asked for their son Daniel’s remains, a year after they were found, so they can end what has felt like a “second abduction”.
The family released a statement through social media asking the State Coroner to hand over the remains of their 13-year-old son.
Tuesday marks the one year anniversary since Daniel was found buried in the Glasshouse Mountains.
“A further 366 days have elapsed and there is no end in sight.
“This is the cruelest twist in a nightmare which began almost nine years ago.”
Daniel disappeared in 2003 from a bus stop on the Sunshine Coast.
The Morcombes’ lawyer Peter Boyce has filed a formal application on behalf of the parents, the Courier Mail reports.
A government spokesman has confirmed the remains will be released – when the defence has accepted or conducted their own tests.
The parents wrote how significant the breakthrough was and how grateful they were but they have no comfort from the discovery.
“It is inhuman to treat Daniel’s remains simply as evidence for a trial…it seems the opposite is true and now we are trapped, surrounded with endless questions and uncertainty, delays and more tests.
“It just goes on and on.”
Defence lawyer Tim Meehan who is representing the man accused of killing Daniel Morcombe, confirmed he will be having his own DNA tests performed, the Courier Mail reports.
“At this stage we’re not in a position to provide any timeframes…because we’re consulting with our experts,” Mr Meehan said.
The accused Brett Peter Cowan is due to face court for a mention in two weeks.
