'A GRAVE': $100 room in major capital horrifies the internet

While Australia's rental market gets its fair share of criticism, one room listed in Malaysia's capital is even a step too far for Aussie landlords.

Those who easily feel claustrophobic might want to avoid this Kuala Lumpur room that has been described online as "a hole for a grave", Malaysian social news site SAYS reported.

A tweet sharing a damning photo of the room in the Maluri area has since gone viral, with more than 15,000 retweets.

"Good morning [to all] except for homeowners in KL that rent out rooms like this," the tweet read.

In the picture, a small foam mattress can be seen on the floor, which almost takes up the entire width of the room.

There is no window and the only other features are a mounted wall fan and a plug socket, with little space for any belongings.

The room is reportedly being leased for RM300 ($100) a month.

"This is mad," one person said, adding they wouldn't pay a third of the price the landlord is asking for.

"What the hell is this?" another asked.

"You're a wizard Harry," another wrote in a nod to the famous character's bedroom under a staircase.

Another user asked if Kuala Lumpur was becoming the new New York City.

"Modern day casket," one person said.

Others shared photos of similar rooms they've rented, revealing their own horror stories.

People are known to live in cramped conditions in some of Asia's biggest cities, most notably Hong Kong which has one of the world's most expensive square meters when it comes to property.

Earlier this year, a Bondi room with limited head room was criticised after it was listed for $275 a week.
