2020 ROY Crystal Dangerfield helps Fever send Lynx to 0-3 start after preseason cut by Minnesota

In 2020, Crystal Dangerfield won Rookie of the Year with the Minnesota Lynx.

On Tuesday, she got her revenge on a team that cut her just one week ago.

On May 3, Dangerfield was released alongside Layshia Clarendon, Rennia Davis and Yvonne Turner as part of a stunning Minnesota roster shake-up on the eve of the WNBA season. She's since signed with Indiana and helped lead the Fever on Tuesday to an 82-76 win that sent the reeling Lynx to 0-3.

Signed via a hardship exception on Friday, Dangerfield's not a part of the Fever's starting lineup. But she was on the floor to finish off the Lynx on Tuesday in a 10-point, six-assist effort to help the Fever to their first win of the season. Dangerfield ran Indiana's offense during the closing minutes and found herself at the free-throw line with 18.9 seconds remaining and a chance to ice the game.

A career 89.6% free-throw shooter, Dangerfield calmly sunk both shots to secure the game's final margin. Kelsey Mitchell, meanwhile, led the Indiana effort with 26 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Seven-time All-Star Sylvia Fowles countered with 26 points and 14 rebounds. But it wasn't enough for the Lynx to secure their first win amid an early season marked by roster turnover. The Lynx cut Dangerfield after she regressed from 16.2 points per game in her Rookie of the Year campaign to 7.7 points per game in 2021.

How long Dangerfield plays with the Fever is unclear. The hardship exception allowed her to join the Fever because their roster dropped below 10 available players with some of their full-time players still playing overseas. Once the Fever get back to a full roster, the hardship exception will expire.

But on Tuesday, she got her shot to show a struggling Lynx team what it was missing.
