Two toddlers survived what could have been a deadly accident after they were ejected during a car crash on a major Houston highway.

On Sunday, Aug. 11, around 7 p.m. local time, officers from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene where two children, ages 1 and 4, survived a rollover crash on the I-10 East Freeway after being ejected from a Jeep driven by their father, 25, according to local ABC affiliate KTRK-TV.

Senior Deputy Thomas Gilliland of the Harris County Sheriff's office said in a statement to PEOPLE, "Upon arrival, deputies determined there was a two-vehicle accident where one of the vehicles flipped over several times causing ejection."

Footage of the incident shared online shows the young children running along the highway while only wearing diapers.

Eyewitness Victor Cordova told KTRK-TV that although he was relieved to see that the children survived, he initially thought the crash had taken a fatal turn.

"I thought they actually passed away. I thought they were dead," he said.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez spoke with local NBC affiliate KPRC-TV and said it was “a sheer miracle” that the two children survived.

“They sustained very minor injuries and are expected to survive… I’m still shocked that they’re alive,” he said.

Gilliland alleged in a statement to PEOPLE that neither child was in a car seat or wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which goes against Texas state law.

"The investigation is still open and active, with charges to be determined," he added.

Both children sustained injuries, and were transported to a local hospital where they are in stable condition. No injuries of the people in the second vehicle were reported.
