Five people have been arrested in Lake Illawarra for their alleged involvement in a hydroponic cannabis cultivation of over a thousand plants and worth about $2.4 million.

The five men were discovered early on Friday morning at an industrial premise in Port Kembla with a sophisticated indoor set up supporting about 570 cannabis plants and 110 kilograms of cannabis leaf, police say.

During a search of another industrial property a further 616 plants were discovered.

The men, aged between 24 and 44, will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Saturday charged with growing a commercial quantity of cannabis.
