A 17-year-old Wisconsin boy who was set to join the Army died after a tractor he was operating fell on top of him last week, authorities said.

The victim, identified as Race Landon, was using the tractor to pull out a tree that had fallen into a driveway on Friday, Aug. 16, around 3:30 p.m. local time when the tragic accident occurred, the he Grant County Sheriff’s Office told WMTV, ABC affiliate WKOW 27 and local affiliate WiscNews.

As Landon pulled the tree, the front end of the tractor came up and the tractor went backwards while Landon was still on it, according to the reports. The tractor came down on top of the teen, causing injuries that killed him, officials said.

After a family member discovered Landon in the driveway and called 911, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office arrived and confirmed that the teen had died at the scene.
