1 injured in University of Bridgeport shooting; suspect still at large
One person was injured Tuesday night in a shooting at the University of Bridgeport.
Officials said the suspect, who was identified as 18-year-old Dylan Cruz, fled the scene and remained on the loose Wednesday. Both the suspect and victim were described as young men. Police said Cruz may be in New York City, the Connecticut Post reported.
Bridgeport, the largest city in Connecticut, is roughly 70 miles northeast of New York City.
Police responded to a report of shots fired at the school’s Marina Dining Hall around 6 p.m. and found a person with non-life-threatening injuries. They were hospitalized.
Investigators believe the suspect and the shooter know each other, but the two are not students. Danielle Wilken, the school’s president, said the dining hall was open to the public because of a sporting event. A soccer game and basketball game were scheduled for Tuesday night.
The two were purportedly visiting the campus and fought before the shooting, which was described as an “isolated incident” with no further threat to the public.
The area was put on lockdown, which was lifted several hours later after the scene was deemed secure.
“I want to emphasize this was an isolated incident between these two individuals. This was not an active shooter other than this incident between these two individuals,” Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter said.
“We want to reassure students, parents, faculty, and Bridgeport residents that the area is safe,” Porter said. “To further strengthen the security of the area, police presence will be maintained on the University of Bridgeport campus until the suspect is brought to justice.”
