1 dead, 1 wounded in Nashville high school shooting, suspect dead by suicide

One student was killed and another wounded in a shooting at Antioch High School in Nashville on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The shooter, a 17-year-old male student at the school, died by suicide at the scene, police said.

The attacker walked into the school cafeteria armed with a pistol around 11 a.m., cops said. He fatally shot one girl and wounded another girl before turning the gun on himself.

The wounded student was grazed on the arm by a bullet and was in stable condition at a local hospital on Wednesday afternoon, Metro Nashville police officer Don Aaron said. The victims have not been publicly identified.

“There is no danger at the school,” Aaron told reporters. “The police department’s SWAT team has cleared the building.”

Any potential motive for the attack remained unclear. Aaron said the police investigation was underway and there “is quite a bit of work to be done.”

Antioch High was locked down shortly after the shooting began. Students were taken to a different nearby hospital to be reunited with their families, and officials told parents not to attempt to reach Antioch High.

The school sits about 13 miles east of The Covenant School, a private elementary school where three students and three adults were killed in a March 2023 mass shooting.

Following that shooting, fierce debate about gun regulations in the Tennessee legislature led to the dramatic expulsion of two Black lawmakers, who were later voted back into office.

Tennessee lawmakers eventually passed a bill allowing teachers to carry guns in school if they undergo training programs.
