Couple forced into groveling apology for public sex act in Thailand

A couple has been forced into a groveling apology after being caught engaging in a public sex act on a street in Thailand.

Thai police have held a press conference in which they presented the pair to local media for a public apology.

Known only as Nadine and Sullivan, the young pair of tourists were asked to pray for "mercy and forgiveness".

They were then made to bow for the cameras, pose for photos, and each pay a fine of 2,000 baht ($57AUD).

The pair, reported to be exchange students, said they had been drinking before the explicit incident occurred on the party island of Koh Phi Phi.

Outraged locals caught the pair in the act, filming the incident and posting it online on July 18.

The grainy footage showed Nadine, who claimed to be from America, crouched on the ground in a white bikini in front of Sullivan, who is believed to be from Ireland.

After a prolonged confrontation – during which Nadine sways on the spot and Sullivan apologises profusely – the pair made a hurried getaway as locals yelled profundities after them.

The video was then broadcast on a local television channel.

Upon hearing they were wanted for charges of committing an indecent act in public, as well as indecent exposure, the couple handed themselves over to Thai police.

The couple has since parted ways.
