Balloon or UFO? Manhattan mystified by floating objects

It wasn’t your average day in New York.

Locals were caught sky-gazing after small orb-shaped objects floated mysteriously around Manhattan, and authorities were left puzzled by the strange UFOs.

The star-struck pedestrians began calling police and the Federal Aviation Authority to warn them of the unusual flying objects, but authorities were left mystified by the object.

While the NYPD claimed the UFO was most likely a balloon, regular New Yorkers floated their own theories on the orbs.

One local told ABC News they believed it was Superman, while another was “looking for the mother ship”.

While conspiracy theorists might say it’s a cover up, one teacher threatened to pop the mystery.

Westchester elementary school teacher Angela Freeman said the sighting has been blown out of proportion, and was merely a bunch of balloons she let fly from an engagement party held for another teacher, the New York Daily News reported.

"UFO? They're crazy - those are our balloons!" the head of the Milestone School in Mount Vermont said.

Some may claim it’s just that old chestnut: “it’s only a balloon”. New Yorkers were not so easily convinced.

Tim Powell, 28, said the objects were "the most bizarre thing I've ever seen. It looked like a jellyfish made of lights that just hovered in the sky like it wanted to be seen. I was half expecting the aliens to beam down and introduce themselves."

But, while some believed it could be a sign of extra-terrestrial life, others remained skeptical.

"Common sense says it wasn't a UFO. Common sense says it was a plane or a balloon, but this thing stopped everyone in the street for two blocks. Any New Yorker will tell you, that alone is extraordinary," 52-year-old witness Daniel Calhoun told USA News Week.

I hope it's an actual UFO. I'm getting tired of learning about the hoaxes. Imagine how fascinating it would be to finally see one... And if it ever gets to land, then a close encounter of a different kind would be experienced and hopefully debunk all the UFO thrillers seen in the movies. How about that?
