A 15-year-old boy died at a public pool after trying to break his own record for holding his breath underwater.

Reiss Morgan died in a 'tragic accident' at the bottom of a public pool in Essex, a coroner has found.

Staff at the pool tried desperately to save Reiss after he passed out underwater, but he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Reiss' distraught parents have waited three years for answers on their son’s 2009 death, which has finally been ruled an accident.

Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray found "It was known Reiss had an interest in seeing how long he could hold his breath underwater," and that his death was no one's fault.

The coroner also apologised to Reiss' parents for their agonising three year wait for answers.

The delay was caused by an investigation into the incident by the local council.

The coroner ruled that none of the pool's staff should face charges after the death, and that no third party was involved.

"This was the most tragic of accidents," she said.

"Clearly he was a much loved little boy. I hope you will be able to look back at positive memories."
