A father has spoken of his horror after his two-year-old daughter was killed after she trapped her neck in the cord of a window blind.

Emily Warner suffered horrific brain damage after the accident and died three months later from a heart attack.

At her inquest yesterday, her father said his family was broken by the death of their daughter.

According to the Daily Mail, the little girl had been put to bed in her family home in Hertfordshire in the UK one evening in August last year. Her parents thought she was sleeping but at some point, she decided to stand up on the edge of her bed frame and climb across her windowsill.

She was found by her father hanging unconscious with only her toes touching the floor.

The toddler remained in a coma for a week after the accident. When she woke up, she was unable to walk, talk or feed herself because her brain had been starved of oxygen.

Despite doctors saying she was improving, she died in December of a heart attack.

Her father, Jamie Warner, told an inquest yesterday how his family was broken by the death of his daughter.

He told reporters after the inquest: “Emmie was the light of our lives, such a wonderful little girl.

“There is no one thing that is responsible, it was an accident. We didn’t see any danger because we weren’t looking.”

Since the tragedy, the Warners have helped promote the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and British Blind and Shutter Association’s Make It Safe campaign.

The campaign calls for improvements to safety standards in blinds to prevent further accidents.

Mr Warner said: “We don’t want other families to suffer in the way we have.

“By taking some simple steps with your blinds you can protect your children.”

The couple replaced their blinds with curtains the day after the accident.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
