Woman held as 'sex slave' for 10 years recalls torture

In a case reminiscent of the horrific Jaycee Dugard abduction, a woman has told of the torture she underwent while being held as a sex slave for a decade.

Tanya Kach of Pittsburg was 14 when she vanished from her parents’ place in 1996 and was never seen again.

She spent the next 10 years of her life captive in the second-floor bedroom of Thomas Hose, her school security guard.

Kach, now 24, was found by the police after a friend she confided in contacted the authorities, CBS News has reported.

The ordeal began when a young Kach decided to confide in Hose about her parents’ impending split.

"My mother wasn't in my life at that point. My dad completely forgot he even had had a daughter and we were living under the same roof, and I was hanging around with the wrong crowd," she tells KDKA-TV in an interview.

Kach says she believed she was beginning a relationship with Hose, 25 years her senior.

"He was an authority figure, wearing a uniform and a badge. (He was) somebody that you would trust, and he befriended me," she recalls.

She soon ran away from her parents’ home and went to Hose’s house which he shared with his parents and a son.

Hose reportedly hid her in a closet in his bedroom and incredibly, his parents claim they did not know about the teenager who spent the next 10 years in there.

Kach tells CBS News her life was confined to Hose’s bedroom "for 24 hours a day and was absolutely horrible".

She says Hose allowed her to take bath just once a week at best and forced her to use a bucket as a toilet.

However, Kach says she was "too brainwashed" to object. "I feel humilitated now. Totally," she says.

She says her captor would to take her down into a cellar in the dead of the night to take a shower and she would oblige. "I thought they were sacrifices were a labor of my love for Tom Hose," she says.

In her upcoming book, Memoir of Milk Carton Kid, Kach has described her daily life in detail.

"Most of the time I ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches along with a banana and a can of Faygo soda pop. Sometimes Tom Hose smuggled me leftovers from his dinner," she recalls.

Kach says her worst memories are the holidays, and Christmas Eve in particular.

"It broke my heart," she says. "I thought of my family, wondering if they were thinking about me."

She was allowed limited access to the back porch but was threatened with dire consequences if she attempted to flee. This went on for years.

Later, Hose dyed her hair in a different colour, changed her name to Nikki and began to trust her with limited freedom.

She befriended a person in a nearby convenience store and confided in him that her name wasn't Nikki at all and she was the girl police had been looking for for a decade.

He called police and Hose was arrested.

Hose, now 53, pleaded guilty in June 2007 to charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a minor, interfering with the custody of a child and child endangerment. A judge sentenced him to 15 years in prison.

He is eligible for parole in February 2012.
