Granddaughter charged over grandfather's death after alleged 'altercation'

An 18-year-old WA woman has been charged over the death of her grandfather.

It is alleged the man died from head injuries after an altercation with his granddaughter turned physical.

He was 89 and bashed with a frying pan, police will allege.

“It's hard to even believe it's happened you know, so it is a shock,” said neighbour, Lynette Baker.

Detectives allege the pair were involved in what they have described as an "altercation" when the elderly man received the fatal head injuries.

Despite living about a minute's drive from Esperance Hospital, doctors could do nothing to save him.

“[I] heard absolutely nothing, apart from the siren," said neighbour John Cassas.

Residents on Randell Street, where the grandfather lived, say the elderly man had lived alone since the death of his wife a number of years ago, until recently.

“There has been two young ladies with a little kid, that's walked through here and gone there,” said Ms. Baker.

The 18-year-old has been charged with grievous bodily harm.

What might have sparked the alleged argument with her grandfather has not been revealed.

She wept throughout a brief court appearance where her lawyer said the charge could be upgraded to murder.
