'Human road block' smash caught on camera

Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment a drugged and speeding learner driver slammed into a 'human roadblock' on Victoria's Hume Highway, following a long police chase.

Traffic cops ordered the road block to trap 19-year-old Ashley Steel on May 12 last year as he weaved dangerously through cars on the Hume Highway, hitting speeds of 200km/h.

In the video, several police units can be heard discussing how to bring Steel's erratic joyride to an end.

"I don't know if there's a way we could do a rolling roadblock or anything else, but we've got to stop this bloke," one officer says.

Drivers ahead were unaware that their vehicles were about to be used to block the path of Steel.

David Rendina and his young family were made to form part of the shield.

He told Seven News reporter Brendan Roberts: "I turned to the kids and just said 'sit still and relax'. He hit us and we watched as the car flew past and stopped in front of us, hitting a barrier. It was all pretty scary."

As Steel approaches the road block one officer can be heard in the footage saying: "We've got all vehicles completely stopped heading towards the Ring Road exit, all traffic is stopped, all three lanes are blocked."

Steel's wild ride came to a terrifying end near Sydney Road on-ramp when he collided with four vehicles.

Others placed in the path of the speeding car remain stunned by police tactics.

Madhawa Mapa said: "No one should be put in that sort of situation again and it's something that Victoria Police can learn from."

Steel is likely to serve a prison sentence after pleading guilty to six charges, including conduct endangering life.

Police have since admitted that their conduct in ending the pursuit was reckless.
