St Kilda player in 'fat chick' slur

Yahoo!7 Updated July 18, 2012, 3:51 pm

A young woman who claims several St Kilda footballers refused to have a photo with her because she was too fat says they should be made to spend time with victims of eating disorders.

The 21-year-old, known only as Jane, says she approached players at Melbourne Airport last week and asked for a photo for a friend, who is a St Kilda supporter.

But she claims she heard one of the players say 'we save ourselves for hot chicks' and 'there should be a 'no fat chicks' section in our club contract'.

She said the interaction left her feeling hurt and ashamed.

"I would like to take them to the Royal Children's Hospital so they can meet the 16-year-old girls who weigh 20 kilos because of people like them," she told Fairfax radio.

"They know who they are, I know what I heard. The damage is forever. What they say may only last ten seconds, but to who they are saying it to can last forever."

St Kilda's Head of Football Chris Pelchan said there was some conjecture about the comments, but that the club had acted on the incident.

"The club has spoken to the playing group, and while there is some conjecture about the comments, the club is mindful that sensitivities need to be respected," Pelchan said in a statement.

"The family involved have indicated their appreciation for the professional way St Kilda Football Club has managed the matter."

The club made a donation to the eating disorder charity Butterfly foundation, and provided a guernsey to the young woman after her mother wrote a letter of complaint.
