A man is being praised for his bravery after racing into a burning Mulgrave house and rescuing a four-year-old boy.

The passer-by jumped through a smashed window to save the little boy from the smoke-filled house in Police Road, the Leader reports.

It is understood the boy's mother managed to escape the blaze and raise the alarm.

The house was engulfed by flames when fire crews arrived at the scene.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
