Bungling bandit gets stuck in restaurant window

A bungling armed bandit burst into a South Melbourne Hungry Jacks restaurant last night using the drive-through window - but got stuck.

When the would-be robber became wedged, staff at the fast food venue in Kings Way, Southbank, tried to shove him back.

Police say he then threatened them with a steel lever, but staff refused to open the till, and he left through the front door empty-handed.

They have released CCTV footage of the incident in the hope of catching the offender.

Detective Senior Constable Dale Maxwell said: "Some of the staff are quite young and they were terrified during the incident, and still are. They don't expect to have someone jump through the drive-through window that's for sure."

The culprit, believed to be in his twenties and of southern European appearance, was last seen running towards Kings Way.

Police say he is of a solid build with an unshaven face, and dark hair.

He was wearing a light grey hooded top, dark blue jeans and grey slip on shoes.

Anyone who recognises the man should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
