Toddler 'run over' by family car

A two-year-old girl has been killed in the driveway of her home at Lake Boga near Swan Hill in the state's northwest.

It is believed the toddler was run over by the family car at the house in Murray Street.

The young girl was pronounced dead when police and ambulance officers arrived.

Kidsafe Victoria president Robert Caulfield said the child's death takes to six the number of toddlers run over in driveways in Victoria in the past two years.

He said driveways were one of the most hazardous areas for children around the home.

"Research has shown most driveway runover incidents occur at or near the child's home, where both the parent and the child may have felt that the child was safe," Mr Caulfield said.

"In a number of incidents, there was no clear separation between the driveway and the rest of the yard or play area."

He advised parents to always supervise their children whenever a car is being moved - to hold their hands or keep them close.

Mr Caulfield said cars should also have a reversing camera or sensor to assist with detection of children or objects behind the car.
