A man has described his terror when he was attacked by a shark off Port Campbell today.

Mike Higgins, 42, was attacked while surfing off Port Campbell beach, on Victoria's south-east coast, at around 10am this morning.

He told Seven News he felt something brush against him in the water, and turned to find a shark hanging from his foot.

"I was surfing with a couple of mates and it brushed passed me," he told Seven News reporter Christie Cooper.

"It had a little bite then let me go after a couple of seconds...I was pretty scared."

A friend took him to Geelong Hospital where he was treated for a small gash, and later discharged.

He is expected to have surgery on his foot in a few weeks, and says he won't be going back into the surf any time soon.
