An English tourist is lucky to be alive after he was the victim of a vicious knife attack in the early hours of this morning in Melbourne's south-east.

The 22-year-old, who arrived in Australia only a week ago, was walking near the corner of Robe and Grey Street, in St Kilda, when he was attacked by an unknown man carrying what police say was a bladed weapon.

The most serious injury the victim suffered was a deep gash to the neck, which could have easily been fatal.

Detective Sergeant Ed Logonder told Seven News reporter Brendan Roberts :"It's lucky the wound to the neck wasn't any deeper because that could have been tragic."

He was also stabbed in the arm and stomach, and required 44 stitches to close the wounds.

The victim was taken to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital where he was treated and later released.

Police say the man had been enjoying a night out with friends and the attack was unprovoked.

"He's very shaken up," Det Sgt Logonder said. "He understands he's received some very serious injuries.

"It's been very traumatic for him. He's only been in the country a short time."

Police have little information about the alleged attacker, who is believed to be Caucasian with black hair.

They are also appealing for a woman who was with the offender at the time to come forward.
