It's likely tomorrow's massive amount will attract more players than ever before, which of course decreases your chances of winning.

This year the lottery draws are going to be bigger and more expensive than ever. So will 2012 be your year to strike it rich?

Lottery winning ‘wizard’ Richard Lustig has plenty of tips on how to cash in. “I'm going to give you a tip that I don't normally give away,” he said.

Lustig is the world's first and only seven times grand prize winner, pocketing over a million dollars.

His tip is simple: pick numbers that have never come up before.

“On most lottery websites, there is a place you can put in a set of numbers, and you can punch the ‘go button’, or whatever, and it will tell you if that set of numbers has come up before,” Lustig said.

But it's not always that easy. On average, to win Lotto, you have a one in eight million chance with a single entry. Oz Lotto is about one in 45 million. While Powerball is the toughest of them all. To win it’s a one in 55 million chance, and the statistics don't lie.

But according to Lustig, there's always a chance.

Billy and Ira Santoso are some of the first lucky punters to take out Division One this year. Their numbers finally came up in the New Year’s Eve $31 million mega draw.

But they're not just any punter - they own a Perth news agency. And for once, instead of handing out the cheque, they cashed in on their store syndicate, raking in almost $200,000.

The syndicate shared the grand prize with 31 other winners, setting themselves up for a very happy new year. Each added more than $968,000 to their bank balances.

Last year $820 million was given away. That figure is expected to be blown out of the water this year.

Moneyhound: The cost of winning the lottery

“Some new players are coming into the game, and overall that means we can offer a higher superdraw program, which is what we call these big draws,” Lotterywest CEO Jan Stewart said.

While it's hard to put a figure on just how big the mega draws will be this year, the more of us that buy tickets, the more it'll increase. But don't expect to see any records broken, like the one in Spain last year, where the world's biggest lottery was up for grabs - a staggering €2 billion, that's almost $2.5 billion.

The closest we've got to that figure here is the $106 million offered by Oz Lotto in 2009. It was shared by two winners.

Tomorrow night is your next chance to become an instant multimillionaire, when Powerball jackpots at $30 million.

But more money doesn't mean a greater chance of winning according to Statistician Professor John Croucher.

“If you double the number of players, you will double the amount of prize money in general, and twice as money people are going to win,” Croucher said.

He believes there's really only one way of increasing your chances of winning a grand prize, other than buying more tickets.

“If you pick numbers like 17, 18, 19, 20, which are running numbers, many people don’t think they're random, so there'd be fewer people who would select something like that,” he said.

It might be a game of chance, but play smart, and you can perhaps improve the odds of striking it rich.
