A recent convert to Islam has allegedly been set upon by fellow Muslims, who took it into their own hands to flog him with a chord 40 times for drinking alcohol.
The three Muslim men involved in the act, allegedly burst into the bedroom of their newly converted Islamic brother, and held down their victim, while a fourth handed out the punishment.
Ibrahim Siddiq-Conlon is a former catholic from Adelaide, now the founder and self appointed leader of an extremist Muslim party called Sharia for Australia. He prophesies the rise of Sharia dominance, the fall of the Government, and his ascension to the highest office in the land, a land ruled by Sharia law.
More stories from Today Tonight“Whether you like it or not, it is inevitable," he said.
“There are always a few people who will get very strange ideas, and are quite happy to expend them in public, even though they have no authority, and have right to speak on behalf of the community," said author Jamila Hussain.
Jamila, a senior lecturer in Sharia law at the University of Technology in Sydney, is a convert to Islam herself, who condemns the whipping of a fellow Muslims.
“Should they have done what they did? No they should not. Muslims who live in a non-Muslim country are bound to obey the law of the land, and in that case Australian law applies - not Sharia," she said.
So far in Australia, some Muslims have asked for Sharia law to be introduced to deal with marriage disputes, and counseling services. But that's where their requests stop, and they insist they do not want Sharia law brought here for anything else.
Diaa Mohamed is an organiser of the Islamic group, My Peace and believes that “even in an Islamic state there's a process - a judicial process, and you are innocent until an Islamic court finds you guilty. But we are not in an Islamic state, and something like this should not happen."
“I've been on the phone and spoken to a lot of Islamic leaders and Imams, and they're unanimous that happened is absolutely not in accordance, nor condoned, by Islam, or any of the Imams here," aid Diaa.
