But here's a case of an Australian man using it to win back the wife who had cheated on him.
John and Rebecca Cook- have become a YouTube sensation for all the wrong reasons after Rebecca strayed into the arms of another man.
“A lot of people have said yes she should of been the one chasing me sometimes it is just not that way and if you love someone you will do anything for them,” said John.
More stories from Today Tonight“We did take each other for granted for a lot of things I would say a good marriage but when we started to have our breakdown is started to become a terrible relationship not a marriage,” said Rebecca.
Married for seven years in this small NSW town of Casino nsw John never suspected his wife would cheat, until he went to answer her mobile one night.
“You have to swipe across the screen to answer it I just missed the call and it was still on the text messages they had been sending and they were more than just text messages,” said John.
Looking for more- Rebecca had reconnected with an ex boyfriend through Facebook.
“I have known him for about 20 years we were very good friends we dated for two years 17 years ago it was sort of like and old boyfriend friend and it just turned out it became and old relationship to a knew one,” said Rebecca.
“Things had deteriorated that badly we were both seeing a solicitor every time we talked. It wasn't really talking we were just yelling at each other quite often the phone calls would just end with a hang up,” said John
That's when the Casino resident played his trump card, posting the video on YouTube to win back his queen of hearts.
"It was the hardest decision of my life to put the video on YouTube, it got to a stage where we couldn't talk. I had been begging her to come home i had been begging her to go to counselling to try and sort things out,” said John.
It was only a matter of days before the video had circulated through the small town, reaching Rebecca, giving her the courage she needed to go back to her family.
“I started to cry because basically it was a reality shock that he was showing me that he did care for me and what had happened didn't change his love he still loved me,” said Rebecca.
When asked why he made it so public, John responded:
“By the time i had put it online it was already public that she had the affair so I was only expecting at the most a few hundred views. I said to a friend if it gets to a thousand I will tell her I wasn't even expecting a thousand views,” said John.
Posted in May, it now has been viewed 700,000 times leaving Rebecca in two minds.
“Embarrassed because people can see what I have done and how much I hurt him but at the same time proud because he was man enough to put a video on YouTube to show me how much he loves me,” said Rebecca.
Relationship psychologist John Aiken says when someone cheats, a lot of hard work needs to be done to rebuild the trust.
“There are certain key stages you have to go through to repair once the cheating has happened you have to answer questions you have to make sure you stop all contact with a third party be totally transparent and also repair your relationship the issues that were problems before have to be dealt with,” he says.
Rebecca has been home with her husband and 3 children for 3 months - and while John turned to YouTube to reconnect with Rebecca - they turned to tradition to renew their vows.
