Yarra Ranges Council StatementIn a written statement, Yarra Ranges Council's Director of Planning Building and Health, Andrew Paxton, said:
Georgia can rest easy. Council wont be coming to take away one of her three guinea pigs now or in the future.
We understand and appreciate that domestic pets, such as guinea pigs, are an important part of many Yarra Ranges families.
And we would certainly encourage any member of our community to make a submission as part of the upcoming second round of consultation on the proposed local laws.
Councils often receive complaints about topics such as graffiti, unsightly properties, nuisance pets, burning off and the like.
Local laws are designed to give us a way of managing these issues and the General Provision Local Law covers these topics.
Yarra Ranges Council is reviewing its General Provision Local Law.
At this stage, Council has just included a variety of options for public comment, based on other council’s experiences and on its own customer’s requests.
It is considering initial community input and will redraft the local law and put it out for formal community consultation later this year. There will be ample time to comment at this stage.
It is about striking a balance between managing the impacts of nuisance with the rights of individuals.
We have asked the community to contribute to help shape their law.
The aim of the local law is to protect the health and wellbeing of the community and to address and manage potential nuisances.
It will give Council the tools to responds when issues arise.
