A criminal has done a real-life makeover job on The Block, hitting contractors at the newly renovated homes, and raiding accounts.

Bank detail theft is the sort of crime we've been warned about before, but seeing The Block being targeted shows just how easily it can happen to anyone.

On the most famous street in the country, Wayne Perry was busy working inside the renovated Block houses when he was robbed.

“While I was cleaning, I got cleaned out,” he said.

Focussed on the task of rejuvenating the carpets after 30,000 people flocked to Cameron St, the professional cleaner had no idea his wallet and identity had been stolen from his locked van parked outside the Richmond houses.

“He’s used my driver’s licence, all our bank cards and everything. He even went into a bank in Collingwood, handed my licence to them, cleaned my accounts out, and then asked the bank teller what other accounts I had. She gave my son’s account and he cleared his account out as well.”

Despite the fact that the thief didn’t know his pin numbers, Perry lost $2000 as the ANZ teller happily accepted the stolen ID.

After fleecing all of Perry’s accounts, the thief went on a spending spree.

The Consumer Action Law Centre's Sarah Wilson sees the theft as very worrying.

“It’s really disturbing that someone was able to go into a branch and face to face pretend to be someone else. You would expect that would be the least easy option,” she said.

“The ANZ should be refunding this person's money. As a victim of fraud he's done nothing wrong, and the ANZ really should have mitigated against this happening by having better procedures, and having their staff follow them.”

Late this afternoon the ANZ issued a statement saying "while we are still investigating exactly how this occurred, I can confirm that we have fully reimbursed both accounts and apologised to Mr Perry for any concern caused."
