Most fresh juice in our supermarkets is not as fresh as we think - they are pasteurised with heat and stored for up to twelve months.
Damian Crock is Chairman of Preshafruit, a company that makes juice which he claims is different to the rest. He says it's as fresh as the day the fruit was picked."The product is put into a high pressure vessel and pressurised for a short period of time and that's what kills the bugs inside the juice," Mr Crock said.
More stories from Today TonightMr Crock wouldn't show Today Tonight much of his production plant for fear competitors will discover his secret -
a pasteurisation technique involving no heat.
"We've developed a technique of cold pasteurisation so we retain all the of the essential properties of the product so we retain the taste, texture and more importantly, the nutrition. And that's revolutionary," Mr Crock said.
Damian claims his juice is a far cry from the heat treated, aseptic juice which fills most of our supermarket shelves as Today Tonight discovered earlier this year.
Citrus growers blew the whistle on thousands of stored aseptic juice containers which were months old yet bottled and marketed to consumers as fresh.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission promised to investigate and prosecute companies misleading consumers. Four months later makers of Daily Juice, Australian Fresh, Crusta and others are yet to be prosecuted for their use of aseptic juice, a practice the companies have admitted to.
Presha fruits are part of a wave of companies responding to consumers demand for a better product following the exposure of aseptic juice. Nippy's black label is organic, fresh and aseptic free and Polys juice in South Australia also has no aseptic or heat pasteurisation. It's as fresh as it gets.Dietician Susie Burrell says there is scientific evidence linking the antioxidants found in juice to cancer cures. The same antioxidants may also prove beneficial in the fight against heart disease.
"The first one, beetroot juice, [there is] actually very strong evidence the high antioxidant content is quite powerful. It's a vegetable juice so it's low in energy," Susie said.
"The two we have here, the tomato and the carrot juice, it's very rich in lihapein which is linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer."
"In pineapple [juice] there is some small amounts of evidence to show the chemicals can reduce the symptoms of sometypes of arthritis. Pomegranate juice [there is] strong evidence to show it reduced markers to prostate cancer and heart disease."
But watch you don't get heart disease drinking too much juice. Some juices have more sugar than Coca Cola.
Based on a serving sizes of 200mls you'll consume 21.3 grams of sugar with a coke which is less than the Golden Circle Pineapple Juice, which contains 22.8 grams.
The Just Juice Orange, and Berri Apple aren't far behind them, both with 17.2 grams and 20.2 grams respectively.More information
