Predicting lottery numbers

September 9, 2009, 6:23 pm Bryan Seymour Today Tonight

Illusionist Derren Brown will attempt to predict the UK lottery results this Wednesday in the first episode of his new television series.

Stories

The illusionist will broadcast live from a secret location and, in a television first, Britain's Channel 4 will show the event across its entire network.

Following the live prediction, Derren will reveal on Friday, September 11 how he did it and how viewers at home can also do it.

Speaking about the stunt, Brown said he realises there are a lot of questions this brings up.

"I hope they'll be answered on the Friday night show," he said.

"For now, I'm really excited and really nervous and cannot tell you for sure how well it will work.

"Some things just have to be tried."

Derren's previous TV specials have included live Russian Roulette, a seance and a foolproof horse race gambling system.

Brown is a mentallist, magician and illusionist and uses a range of techniques including hypnosis and misdirection to achieve his illusions.

He is also a well-known sceptic, artist and atheist.

Maths lecturer Clio Cresswell from the University of Sydney is sceptical.

"For this one you only need six numbers so it's one in 14 million which is a 99.99999 per cent chance of losing," he said.

"I'm telling you he has not found a way to pick the numbers, otherwise he'd be playing lottery and not telling anyone about it."
