We must eat five to 10 servings of fruit and vegetables every day but Dr Sandra Cabot says juicing them can help prevent and treat many diseases.

We're told we must eat five to 10 servings of fruit and vegetables every day to keep well but how can we pack that many fruits and vegies into one day? Doctor of medicine and natural therapist Dr Sandra Cabot has the answer.

Dr Cabot recommends putting fruits and vegies in the juicer.

"You're getting a unique way of giving to your body very concentrated amounts of these powerful antioxidants," she said.

"You couldn't do that just by munching through that quantity of vegetables and fruits."

While that sounds okay with oranges and carrots, how about cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach and broccoli juice?

Dr Cabot says it's the pathway to health and Elizabeth Linsell agrees.

After being sick for 14 years Ms Linsell says she is now on top of the world. She is proof of the power of cabbage juice cocktails.

"I actually crave it," she said.

"When I first started, for about the first four to five weeks I was strictly having cabbage juice, Brussels sprouts, beans, some celery, parsley - pretty much everything green.

"I went back four weeks later and the naturopath said, 'how's your headaches?' I said, 'I haven't had them'. I'd forgotten."

Her doctors diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome, a condition endured by one in five Australians.

"They said 'work out what affects you and don't eat it'. There is nothing they can do. I have to deal with it," Ms Linsell said.

And that's what she's done.

She went off wheat and dairy and on with juicing.

"We have combined modern medicine, the naturopath, the juicing, the diet and I really didn't think it would work but it has changed everything about me," Ms Linsell said.

Denise Barnes' life went haywire when she found out she had cancer.

"It was very tough. I was very sick from the chemotherapy. I lost all my hair - once again the tiredness, the weakness," Ms Barnes said.

To make matters worse her defence system ganged up on her - she developed a form of arthritis called Schrogen's Syndrome.

Her doctor wanted her to go on steroids but she refused.

She turned to raw juice.

"Raw is important because raw fruit and vegetables contain active enzymes which can help with our digestion. They also contain living antibiotics," Dr Cabot said.

So did it work?

"The pains in my stomach have settled down. I have gone off all my inflammatory drugs," Ms Barnes said.

You don't have to muck around finding expensive organic grocery shops to make wonderful juices, your local grocer will do but there is one important rule - buy fresh and juice early.

Here are some of the juice recipes Dr Cabot recommends.

  • Cancer patients should try a mixture of spinach, apple, papaya, carrot, garlic, beetroot and mushroom.
  • For depression, try strawberries, broccoli, carrot, string beans and lettuce.
  • If you want to pique your libido, blend guava and passionfruit with orange.

"I think juicing is a good insurance policy," Dr Cabot said.
