Worldwide television recall

Electronics giant Sony has put out a voluntary worldwide recall of three Sony Bravia LCD television models because of a fire risk concern.

Consumer

1.6 million of these televisions were sold around the world between July 2007 and December 31 2008, but Sony can't tell how many were purchased in Australia.

  • The television may ignite internally and emit smoke while in use.

What are the defects?
  • May contain a component that in a rare number of cases could over-heat and ignite, possibly resulting in melting of the upper rear casing of the television.

What should consumers do?
  • Sony is voluntarily initiating a programme to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a free repair. Customers who own one of the affected products should contact our Customer Contact Centre on 1300 13 7669 (SONY) to arrange an inspection of the TV.

Important
  • If customers notice any abnormality in the TV's operation (e.g. an unusual noise, smell or smoking), they should immediately unplug the power cable, stop using the TV and contact Sony.

Doctor leaves two for dead
