The numbers have prompted a new study that's looking into driver fatigue and its terrible impact on families.
Tiffany Flavel was just 21-years-old when she was taken from her family. She fell asleep at the wheel and died in a fiery crash that could easily have been avoided.
Tiffany was just 500 metres from her home when her car smashed into a tree. She'd been working all night at the family bakery.More stories from Today Tonight

No one thought the young, careful driver would succumb to fatigue and lose her life.
The charred pieces of burnt wreckage are all that's left of a tragedy that stole Tiffany from Christine and Mark, who are now both advocates against driver fatigue.
Christine says "people who drive when they're tired don't realise the impact that they can have. They're not just putting themselves at risk, they're putting other people on the road at risk - innocent people ... they can take their lives, and their families' and the people that they leave behind."
Her message is clear. "Even if it's just a short trip - ten minutes down the road - if you're really tired then don't drive," Christine said.
Around the world two million accidents are caused by fatigued drivers, and 200,000 people a killed.
In Australia one in three road deaths are directly attributable to fatigue. Now considered a killer on par with speeding and alcohol, the trouble with fatigued driving starts by ignoring the signs.
Professor Ann Williamson, director of the Transport and Safety Research Centre at the University of New South Wales has just supervised an extensive study of 90 everyday sleep-deprived drivers to check their ability to stay awake.
"People do recognise (they) feel tired. So it's a decision to continue when you are tired, and that's really what our research is telling us is the problem - that they know they are tired but decide to pus through regardless," Professor Williamson said.
