Following the chaotic scenes of a potentially disastrous incident, as at least 30 people dialed triple 0 in just two minutes, the knives are out once again for elderly drivers.

Today however police called for relatives and friends to dob in older drivers they consider unfit to be behind the wheel.
“This is about the safety of the individual, and also the safety of other road users,” President of the Seniors Association, Neville Daynes said.
Should drivers over a certain age be forced to do an annual test before they get their licence renewed?
Daynes argues that one incident shouldn't mean all elderly drivers are penalised.
“I know that in Victoria, which is more a self-assessment process, the evidence seems to be that the incidence of elder drivers suffering accidents is no greater than in those states where they have much more restrictive assessments,” he said.
Driving restrictions around the country vary. In Queensland drivers over 75 don't need to do a driving test, but they must carry a medical certificate, which can last up to five years.

Drivers over 75 in New South Wales must do a medical test each year, and those over 85 must also do a driving test every two years.
“I would take the view that elderly drivers don't need extra restrictions,” Daynes said.
There are over 270,000 licence holders in Queensland aged over 70. Of those more than 4,000 are over 90, and thirteen over 99.

In New South Wales more than $400,000 drivers are over 70, of those 20 people with licences are over 99.
In Victoria almost 300,000 drivers are over the age of 70, of those 108 drivers are over the age of 99.
Mollie Campbell-Smith, aged in her 90s, is a veteran on the roads and believes proficiency behind-the-wheel comes with age. The great-grandmother hopes to keep driving as long as she can.
