While the world partied their way into the new year, one American mother welcomed twins with a unique difference.
Washington DC woman Yaleni Santos Tohalino delivered the first of her twins, baby girl Lorraine Yaleni Begazo, at 11:58pm on December 31 2013 at Medstar Washington Hospital Centre.
But little Lorraine's brother Brandon Ferdinando Begazo arrived after the turn of the year, at 12:01 am on January 1 2014.
"I feel wonderful full of joy and happiness and a full sense of realization," the twins' father, Warren Begazo, told ABCNews.com.
"We really did celebrate New Year's Eve."
In Canada, another family welcomed their own New Year's Eve twins.
Fraternal sisters Sophia and Gabriela Salgueiro were born on different days and different years, despite technically being twins having gestated together in their mother's womb.
"They kind of got that golden ticket. They've got different birthdays," the twins' mother, Lindsay Salgueiro, told ABCNews.com.
"They're going to be best friends for life."
"Not a bad way to end the year and not a bad a way to start the year off," Salgueiro said.
Both mothers and their babies are doing well.
