A Des Moines mum's final Christmas wish for her family has been granted two years after she succumbed to cancer.
A fan of local radio station Star 102.5's Christmas Wish program, Brenda Schmitz wrote a letter that she told a friend only to send once her husband David had found love again, the Des Moines Register reported.
The mother of four sons died of cancer in 2011.
Schmitz penned the letter just a month before she passed away, with three simple wishes she hoped the radio station would grant.
“I have a wish for David and the boys and the woman and her family if she has kids also,” she wrote. “I want them to know I love them very much and they always feel safe in a world of pain.”
The wishes were: something nice for David's new partner to pamper her with.
“She deserves it,” Schmitz wrote.
“Being a step-mother to all those boys, and especially giving little Max a mother’s love that only she can give. Make her smile and know her efforts are truly appreciated from me.
"Thank you. I love you, whoever you are.”
The second: A magical trip for her family.
“Somewhere where they all can enjoy their company and companionship as a family and create those memories that will be with them forever,” she wrote.
And the final wish: A big party for the doctors and nurses who treated her cancer at Mercy Medical Centre.
She asked that they would get "a night out full of drinks, food and fun for all they do every day for the cancer patients they encounter.”
Brand manager at the station, Scott Allen, admitted they had never had a request quite like it in their Christmas appeal.
“About a week and half ago we got a letter in the mail,” he said.
“We’ve been doing the Christmas Wish program for 20-plus years. We’ve never received a wish like this, ever.”
David wasn't told about the touching letter from his wife until he was in the studio, where all he knew was that he would be getting a Christmas wish granted.
But somehow he knew his loving wife had something to do with it.
“It’s not surprising, ’cause the last year and a half she’s shown so many signs that she’s there,” he said.
