An Egyptian executioner has given a chilling interview, detailing how much he loves his work and telling how he had a "hobby" of killing as a teenager, in an unverified video.
The Daily Mail reports that Hajj Abd Al-Nabi, who claims he has hanged some 800 people convicted of crimes ranging from adultery to murder, said: "In all honesty, I love my work. I just love it!"
Mr Al-Nabi's enthusiasm to serve turned even more macabre when he told of strangling cats and dogs in the canal as a teenager.
"Strangulation was my hobby. When I applied for the job and did well on the tests – proving that I could take the psychological pressure and so on – they said: 'Congratulations. Now, grow a moustache'.
"The truth is that my heart is dead, because executing comes from the heart, not the moustache. Only if you have a heart of stone can you be content in this line of work."
The video has not been authenticated. It has been reposted and translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, which says it emerged online in September.
Some critics are sceptical about the claims made in the video because the so-called research institute, which has links to Israel, has often been accused of attempting to portray the Arab world in a negative light.
