A young animal lover has died falling off a cliff while trying to rescue his puppy.
Rhys Clark, 27, and his girlfriend Ania, 25, slipped and fell 45m from a clifftop in Southerndown in South Wales after their dog Sherlock fell on to a ledge.
The Daily Mail in Britain reports that the couple tried to climb down to rescue the dog but slipped and plunged to the bottom.
Mr Clark was killed instantly. Sherlock the dog also died.
Mr Clark's mother yesterday paid tribute to her son, describing him as 'wonderful', and saying the two made a lovely couple.
"My son would still be here if it wasn’t for the dog but I can’t look at it like that. I had the most wonderful son, I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. I just hope he didn’t suffer.’
Mr Clark's mother says she was the one to tell Ania that her boyfriend had died when she visited Ania in hospital, where she is recovering from multiple fractures.
"She was very badly hurt and can’t remember anything that happened. Rhys and Ania were lovely together – they had plans to marry and settle down.
"Rhys loved his holidays and visiting Ania’s home in Poland. He was very close to her family.’
"One of the things Rhys always said he wanted to do was to rescue an abandoned puppy and give it a good home,’ she said.
"He and Ania loved the little dog and took it for walks along the clifftops at weekends," she told The Daily Mail
The couple had rescued Sherlock from an animal shelter.
