He was standing on Victoria Street at 9:10 last night when he was punched once.
Witnesses say that he fell heavily to the ground and that he hit his head quite hard on the pavement.
That young man was brought here to St Vincent's Hospital.
He is in a critical condition.
A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene.
He is facing court today on several serious charges.
In a terrible twist to this story Kelly this incident happened in almost the same spot as where Thomas Kelly was king-hit in July of 2012.
Police are angry.
When these things happen it's a tragedy.
I am about to compare this incident to the Thomas Kelly matter.
When anybody is I assaulted it's terrible.
When people and particularly young people are seriously injured, it is nothing but disappointing, not only for the police but devastating for the young man's family.
Now, there were 173 arrests all up across NSW during the New Year's Eve celebrations.
That is well up on last year.
So it's fair to say that police are disappointed in general with the figures.
