Remote locations came under the spotlight at Australia's North West tourism's annual awards ceremony on Thursday night, because among the award winners from across the Kimberley and Pilbara were some of the most isolated and exotic places in the north. Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, Kimberley Coastal Camp and Home Valley Station featured prominently as all eyes turned to low-impact tourism.

Broome's world-class resorts have played a huge part in building its reputation as a holidaymaker's wonderland in the years since Lord Alistair McAlpine first arrived in town. However, while there is still many a spectacular tropical paradise to be found, a town as tourist-savvy as Broome knows that a variety of accommodation options is necessary to ensure it's not solely the domain of the wealthy traveller.

Even people who've never been to Broome could be forgiven for thinking they already know the town intimately. We've all seen the photos and heard the stories of the unparalleled natural beauty of the area, be it colourful Cable Beach sunsets, the rich, red dirt, or the magical Staircase to the Moon over the mudflats of Roebuck Bay.

Some of the Kimberley's wild places can be reached only by air or sea. You wheel in a great arc in a light aircraft over the high red, rocky plateau ranges and drop down to a scallop in the coast with a small retreat, set against a turquoise sea.
