Someone has been busy with the grader along the red gravel road that provides a rumbly carpet ride into Pardoo Station. We are on the turf of Santa Gertrudis cattle, our entrance barely noted by the placid ruminants. An impulsive moment has resulted in this detour off the Great Northern Highway, 120km north of Port Hedland, to seek a spot of cattle-station camping.

I swear that when we pass over the Tropic of Capricorn, I feel a bump. Just near the Capricorn Roadhouse on Great Northern Highway, this invisible line at 23.5 degrees latitude seems to change things. You are in the north, proper. You are in the Pilbara.
