HOW BOXING WORKS AT THE OLYMPICS

The Ring measures 6m x 6m.

In Olympic competition, boxers wear protective headgear and a vest.

Competitors, paired at random, will contest the elimination and qualification rounds, leading to the quarter-finals.

The subsequent phase is the semi-final, followed by the final in each category. Both losing semi-finalists get a bronze medal.

Each fight takes place over three rounds of three minutes for men and four rounds of two minute duration for women, with one minute's rest between rounds.

Points are awarded for each successful punch landed.

In London there are 13 categories, including 10 for men and three for women.

The men's competition ranges from light flyweight to super heavyweight.

It will be the first time women's boxing has been contested at the Olympics and it will range across three divisions - flyweight, light weight, and middle weight.
